In response to a globally growing demand for ESG products, rating agencies, ESG index providers as well as a host of other organizations such as financial companies, fintech firms, and nonprofits offer ESG analysis, scores, and research tools. The good news is that some of these tools are free. Tools like these can help you choose and fine-tune your ESG investment strategy.

Refinitiv offers free ESG company scores and rolled out an ESG voice app to facilitate access to ESG company data. Now anyone can see the ESG footprint, based on publicly available data, of over 10,000 companies. Simply enter the company’s name in the search bar and you get an overall score as well as as the company’s environmental, social and governance scores.
As You Sow, a nonprofit that promotes sustainable investing, offers free online tools to help investors check if the companies included in their funds are really aligned with their values.
The screening tools are divided into six themes:
- fossil-free funds,
- gender equality funds,
- gun-free funds,
- deforestation-free funds,
- weapon-free funds,
- tobacco-free funds,
- prison-free funds
The screeners are easy to use. Just type in the name or the ticker of the fund in the search bar. If you click on the name of the fund, it will take you to a page with a scorecard and financial performance indicators measured against different benchmarks.
Frankfurt-based ESG metrics provider Arabesque S-Ray also offers a free web tool platform, where investors can check the sustainability metrics of more than 7,600 publicly listed companies.
The company offers a quantitative data tool called, S-Ray, that has a free version. The tool provides analysis on the sustainability of companies through its GC Score, ESG Score, Preferences Filter, and Temperature Score.
- ESG scores: measures long-term performance
- GC scores: assessment of companies based on the four core principles of the United Nations’ corporate sustainability initiative, the Global Compact (GC): human rights, labor rights, environment and anti-corruption
- Preferences filter: checks the company’s involvement in controversial activities such as tobacco and weapons
- Temperature score: measures a company’s climate impact
