How we ranked fees

We ranked CMC Markets's fee levels as low, average or high based on how they compare to those of all reviewed brokers.

To get things rolling, let's go over some lingo related to broker fees. What you need to keep an eye on are trading fees, and non-trading fees.

In the sections below, you will find the most relevant fees of CMC Markets for each asset class. For example, in the case of forex and stock index trading the most important fees are spreads, commissions and financing rates.

We also compared CMC Markets's fees with those of two similar brokers we selected, IG and XTB. This selection is based on objective factors such as products offered, client profile, fee structure, etc. See a more detailed rundown of CMC Markets alternatives.

To have a clear overview of CMC Markets, let's start with the trading fees.

CMC Markets trading fees

CMC Markets has low forex and stock index CFD fees, while the stock CFD fees are high. CMC Markets one of the most transparent brokers in the market, which help to easily calculate your trading costs. For example, we really liked that you can check historically the financing costs.

We know it's hard to compare trading fees for CFD brokers. So how did we approach the problem of making their fees clear and comparable? We compare brokers by calculating all the fees of a typical trade for selected products.

We have chosen popular instruments within each asset class:

  • Stock index CFDs: SPX and EUSTX50
  • Stock CFDs: Apple and Vodafone
  • Forex: EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, EURCHF and EURGBP

A typical trade means buying a leveraged position, holding it for one week and then selling. For the volume, we chose a $2,000 position for the stock index and stock CFDs and $20,000 for the forex transactions. The leverage we used was:

  • 20:1 for stock index CFDs
  • 5:1 for stock CFDs
  • 30:1 for forex

These catch-all benchmark fees include spreads, commissions and financing costs for all brokers. Let's see the verdict for CMC Markets fees.

CFD fees

CMC Markets has average CFD trading fees. The stock index CFD fees are low, while stock CFD fees are high. This is similar to its competitors.

Europe 50 index CFD fee $3.1 $1.6 $2.2
Apple CFD fee $22.4 $31.9 $17.9
Vodafone CFD fee $23.4 $25.7 $20.9

Forex fees

CMC Markets' forex fees are low. It's a bit lower than IG's fees, but a bit higher than XTB's.

Account types

CMC Markets provides two account types, which differ in the countries they're available in, accepted account base countries, pricing, and taxes.

In this review, we tested the individual CFD account.

How to open your account

The account opening process at CMC is fully digital and the account verification normally would take no more than 1-2 business days. However, our account opening took a bit longer because it was unclear that we have to upload two ID documents.

The steps of opening an account at CMC are the following:

  1. Select the country of residence, then provide an email address and password
  2. CMC will send you a code via email with which you can proceed
  3. Choose the account type, base currency and whether or not it will be a joint or individual account
  4. Fill out your personal details, and financial background
  5. After these steps, the demo platform will greet you. Upload documents to verify your identity and residency
  6. After verification, you are ready to fund your account

To verify your identity, a photo of both sides of your driver's license, national ID card or passport is accepted. For residency verification, you can upload a bank statement, utility bill, mortgage statement or a credit card statement.

Be sure to upload more than one document for ID verification. This was not clear for us, which eventually led to a longer account opening.

You can use multiple options for deposit and withdrawal, and a lot of account base currencies are accepted at CFD accounts. The domestic bank, credit/debit card, and electronic wallet withdrawals are free of charge, however, if you use a same-day or international bank withdrawals, a £15 fee is charged.
Pros Cons

At CMC Markets, you can choose from 10 base currencies if you open a CFD account. At spread betting accounts, only GBP and EUR are accepted.

Available base currencies at CMC Markets
Australian Dollar British Pound Canadian Dollar Euro New-Zealand Dollar

Polish Zloty

Singapore Dollar Swedish Krona United States Dollar

This selection of account base currencies is better compared to similar brokers.

Base currencies at CMC Markets vs similar brokers

Number of base currencies 10 6 4

Why does this matter? For two reasons. If you fund your trading account in the same currency as your bank account or you trade assets in the same currency as your trading account base currency, you don't have to pay a conversion fee.

A convenient way to save on currency conversion fees is by opening a multi-currency bank account at a digital bank. Revolut or Transferwise both offer bank accounts in several currencies with great currency exchange rates as well as free or cheap international bank transfers. Opening an account only takes a few minutes on your phone.

CMC Markets withdrawal fees and options

CMC Markets charges no withdrawal fee for the domestic bank, credit/debit, or electronic wallet withdrawals.

However, if you'd like to receive your funds instantly or you use an international bank transfer, there's a £15 charge. The international bank transfer at CMC Markets means that you withdraw your money to a bank account having different currency than your account base currency, e.g. if you withdraw from your GBP-based brokerage account to your EUR-based bank account.

You can use the same options for withdrawal as for deposit. There is only one limitation: if you have a spread betting account, you can't withdraw to Mastercard credit/debit cards.

The web trading platform is available in 9 languages:

Look and feel

First, it may seem that CMC's web platform is too advanced for beginners. The platform guide and the platform's great design and user-friendliness will help to get familiar within a short time.

The platform is highly customizable, one of the most customizable platforms we've tested. You can also save up to 10 custom platform templates.

Login and security

CMC Markets provides only a one-step login. A two-step login would be definitely more secure.

Search functions

The search functions work really well. You can search for an asset by clicking the search bar or clicking 'Library', which will open up a window like on the screenshot below.

You can search in two ways:

  • Type the name of the asset in the search bar
  • Browse categories and product types. You can also filter by product type, region, country.

Placing orders

You can use a lot of order types, including advanced ones:

  • Market

  • Stop
  • Trailing Stop-loss
  • Guaranteed Stop-loss*

*For placing guaranteed stop-loss, you have to pay a premium, which will be refunded if the order is not executed.

There are also two order time limits you can use: Good 'til cancelled (GTC), Good 'til time (GTT).

It's easy to set price alerts and notifications. You can set price alerts when you select a product from the 'Library'. We also liked that you can set notifications for the events on the economic calendar.

Portfolio and fee reports

CMC Markets has clear and transparent portfolio and fee reports. Click the 'History' on the bottom of the platform. Upon clicking, it will list all trading costs and payment for your last trades.

Desktop trading platform

3.3
CMC Markets has no in-built desktop interface. For this purpose, ti uses MetaTrader 4. In design and functionality, it is way behind CMC's web platform.
Pros Cons
Clear fee report No two-step (safer) login
Good customizability (for charts, workspace) Poor design
Price alerts

CMC Markets provides MetaTrader 4 for desktop.

MetaTrader 4 is available in an exceptionally large number of languages.

Look and feel

MetaTrader 4 has great customizability. You can easily change the size and the position of the tabs.

However, the platform feels outdated and some features are hard to find. For example, it took some time until we found how to add an asset to the watchlist.

Markets and products

2.2
CMC Markets' product selection covers only CFDs, forex and crypto assets. You can't trade with popular asset classes, such as real stocks, bonds, mutual funds, options or futures.

CMC Markets is primarily a CFD and forex broker. Whether you wish to trade CFDs of currency pairs, stock indices, stocks, ETFs, commodities, bonds or cryptos, you will find an extraordinarily wide selection of products at CMC Markets. This stands out compared to the product range of its main competitors.

Disclaimer: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 78% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Commodity CFDs (#) 136 47 18

You can't change leverage levels. For forex products, it is set at 30:1 automatically. This is a drawback.

Changing the leverage is a very useful feature when you want to lower the risk of your trade. For example, instead of trading with 5:1 leverage, only trade with 2:1 leverage in case of stock CFDs. Be careful with forex and CFD trading, as the preset leverage levels are high.

CMC Markets' research tools are useful both for advanced and beginner traders. The tools can support detailed technical analyses, while the built-in Reuters news and Morningstar services can help you with the fundamental analaysis.

Most of the research tools are available in CMC Markets' Next Generation web platform. Others, like market analyses, can be found from CMC Markets' homepage: just click on 'News and Analyses' in the header. Market analyses and news are available in other languages than English, just as customer support services.

Trading ideas

CMC Markets provides trading ideas in multiple forms. The first is called 'Insights' in which CMC collects market-related info, e.g. the planned output of a US Tesla factory plant, and then compares them to what was speculated. It also lists the relevant assets to each, but it works as more of a service of informing clients.

The second form is called 'Chart Forums'. Upon opening, you'll be greeted by a number of short technical analyses and speculations by CMC professionals, and CMC users. It's closely related to social trading: people can share their chart analyses with each other.

News feed

News are both provided by CMC and Thomson Reuters. Both are available for checking from the web platform, the former leads you to CMC's 'News and Analyses' blog, and the latter is Thomson Reuters, which opens up directly in a separate window on the platform. Reuters news includes updates on politics, the biggest companies in certain countries, and more. Also, the web trading platform provides you with a link to CMC TV, which in functionalities is closely related to IG's IGTV. By the help of this YouTube channel, CMC provides you with multiple updates per week on market movements and development. Other than market updates, these videos include technical analysis as well.

Other research tools you will enjoy

CMC Markets has a well-structured economic calendar. This calendar is incorporated with Thomson Reuters, and it lists the most important news and developments per day. Each event has a 'market impact' meter depicting the effect it might have on the financial markets and actual and forecasted movement data. You can filter these events by day, country or market impact. Also, you can set alarms to these events separately

The phone support is great too, wait times are short, and all operators were helpful, with a clear, understandable voice.

When it comes to emails, most of our inquiries were answered within the same day. On the other hand, there was an occasion when we haven't received any updates for on the status of our live account verification for a week. The misunderstanding was solved with the help of the live chat.

Also, we missed the 24/7 availability. CMC Markets' support is only available on weekdays from Monday to Friday but for 24 hours a day, which is a great help.

Bottom line

CMC Markets is regulated by top-tier regulators and one of the best CFD and forex brokers among brokers.

On the plus side, it has low forex fees, well-developed trading platforms, and useful research and educational tools.

There are a few drawbacks though. The stock CFD fees are high and the account verification is not seamless. Also, product selection covers only CFD and forex asset classes, no real stock, bond, or mutual fund are provided.

Feel free to test CMC Markets' first-class trading platform since it has great features and there is no minimum required deposit to open an account.
